SHADE AND THE JAZZ DESTROYERS SMOOTH YET SASSY FEMME JAZZ VOX It's not every day that a group of musicians meet up for an evening to have fun and make some music - and then end up coming up with something good enough to release. And when I stopped listening I had the tune buzzing round in my ears. I shouldn't have been surprised; the music had been made by an informal gathering of the Soul Destroyers in the front room of song-writer and guitarist Jake Ferguson. A fantastic jazz/gospel singer called Shadé had joined them to liven things up. It's her voice that does the business here, and when you add the talented drumming of Malcom 'The Baron' Catto to the equation then you just can't go wrong. 'Good Things' is one of those tunes that has so much going for it on this version that it will be difficult to reproduce in a studio without losing the atmosphere given here by informal performance. The band were on form that night, everybody knows their place and what is required, there is a swing and laid back feel provided by the musicians that Shadé is feeling, you can tell by the generous lilt of her voice. 'Newborn' is an uptempo jazz groove with Malcolm Catto stretching out on the drums, he goes all the way knitting together those funk patterns with his own unique style. Shadé is feeling this one too, enjoying the energy and swing that only this enthusiastic collective of musicians can provide.
