The creation of the fantastic figures and the otherworldly environment for Ridley Scott's science fiction movie 'Alien' in 1979 made the Swiss artist and designer HR Giger's name world famous and got him Hollywood's ultimate prize, the 1980 Academy Award for the Best Achievement in Visual Effects. 'Alien' became an icon of 20th century popular culture and its creator HR Giger is adored by an international audience of art lovers and SciFi-afficionados. Giger is recognised as one of the foremost artists of Fantastic Realism and some of his work has become part of the canon of fantastic design. Giger was educated as an architect and industrial designer, but turned to art soon. In the late 1960s he took up air-brush technique and developed his own unique freehand painting style, leading to the creation of many of his best known works. Giger's impressive work before 'Alien' is largely underestimated today. This new book documents this lesser known aspect of his oeuvre for the first time internationally. Many of these early paintings and drawings have been rarely shown before, or even been unpublished at all, and are juxtaposed here to works by predecessors of Giger, such as Piranesi, Goya, Klinger, Ensor, or Fuseli.
